Cortical blindness: diagnostic issues in sudden bilateral visual loss

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cortical blindness is defined as bilateral visual loss due to disruption of the pathways beyond lateral geniculate body. Visual disturbance a result cortical lesion can manifest in different ways. Anton's syndrome one manifestations blindness, which presents denial vision associated with confabulation setting obvious loss. This case illustrates challenges diagnosing emergency setting.

Ictal cortical blindness with permanent visual loss.

Cortical blindness is rarely an ictal manifestation. We report the case of a man who developed transient cortical blindness followed by permanent visual deficits during repeated partial seizures. Intermittent visual impairment began at age 14 years. After he had the first generalized seizure at age 28 years, neurologic, ophthalmologic, angiographic, and brain computed tomographic (CT) examinati...

Sudden Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss Secondary to Cerebral Venous Thrombosis

Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an important otological emergency. Up to 90% of the cases are idiopathic. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an extremely rare identifiable cause as it only represents 0.5% of all strokes.   Case Report: In this paper, an unusual case of bilateral SSNHL secondary to bilateral CVT with rapid and complete recovery is reported. The patie...

Visual imagery influences brain responses to visual stimulation in bilateral cortical blindness.

Mental imagery is a powerful mechanism that may facilitate visual perception as well as compensate for it. The role of V1 in mental imagery is still a matter of debate. Our goal here was to investigate whether visual imagery was still possible in case of bilateral V1 destruction behaviorally evidenced by total clinical blindness and if so, whether it might boost residual visual perception. In a...

Bilateral cortical blindness--Anton syndrome: case report.

The aim of this work is the specify of rare neurological disorder, bilateral cortical blindness and Anton syndrome. It is about loss of vision in the presence of intact anterior pathways and a form of visual anosognosia, with resulting patient denial of blindness. This is a case of 72-year old man with history of diabetes and hypertension. Diagnosis is based on the exclusion of disease in the a...

Bilateral Cortical Blindness due to Bilateral Occipital Infarcts without Anosognosia

Cerebral blindness is defined as bilateral loss of vision secondary to disruption in the visual pathways posterior to the lateral geniculate nuclei [1]. Cortical blindness, a particular type of cerebral blindness, is defined as the total loss of vision in the presence of normal pupillary reflexes and in the absence of ophthalmological disease [2], resulting from bilateral lesions of the striate...
